Hi There Greenwood Friends,
I asked Dave, our nursery manager, to walk through the nursery this week and make a list of the trees and shrubs looking especially good right now.
When I looked it over—and added Ginkgo, one of my favorites—I realized it was also a pretty good October planting list.
So rather than simply tell you what's looking good, let's do something more useful.
Here's where some of these plants might fit in your own landscape.
Need a Shade Tree?
Brandywine Red Maple, October Glory Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Autumn Blaze Maple and Tulip Poplar all need room to grow, but they're wonderful choices for adding shade and giving a large front or backyard some structure. Plant where the mature canopy will have plenty of space to spread.
Want a Tree That Makes Fall Special?
Ginkgo is one of my favorites. Its distinctive fan-shaped leaves turn a beautiful golden yellow in fall. Give it a place where it can become a specimen tree—and where you'll be able to enjoy that color from the house, patio or street.
Want Something You Can Eat?
Persimmon, Paw Paw and Dwarf Everbearing Mulberry let you work fruiting plants right into the landscape. Try them along a sunny edge, in a more natural part of the yard or somewhere between the ornamental garden and kitchen garden.
Have a Woodland Edge or Wildlife Garden?
Spicebush is a natural fit for woodland edges, native gardens and less formal areas—and it's a host plant for the Spicebush Swallowtail. We currently have them in one quart pots.
Want a Burst of Fall Color?
Burning Bush is hard to miss when its foliage turns brilliant red. Use it where there's room for a substantial shrub and where its autumn color can be appreciated. It is considered invasive or restricted in some areas. Currently, we cannot ship burning bush into the following states: DE, MA, ME, MN, NH, NY, VT, or WI.
Need Privacy or Screening?
American Pillar and Green Giant Arborvitae can screen a neighbor, soften a fence, hide a utility area or create a green backdrop behind the rest of the garden. And once deciduous trees lose their leaves, you'll appreciate that evergreen structure even more.
That's our October list.
Not every plant is right for every garden. But sometimes seeing what looks good right now is exactly what helps you figure out what your own landscape has been missing.
And Yes... We're Still Finding Homes for Plants
We still have more plants here than we need, so we've reduced their prices to help move them out of our nursery and into your gardens.

And others are varieties we've decided to discontinue.
Once our remaining inventory of those plants is gone, we don't plan to restock them.
